Movie Posters: Everyone Has A Favorite

As children, we all remember being captivated by the very large movie posters that welcomed us into the cinema. These colorful, big advertisements spoke volumes with their glossy images–some of them haunting, others exciting, adventurous, terrifying, and so on.

Often times, these movie posters find their way onto the walls of our homes, university dormitories, offices, and the like. Just like a fine piece of art, a movie poster is appreciated and admired by many. Some posters become valuable in time and worth a lot of money, according to ReelClassics.com.

A lot of collectors go one step further by having favorite movie posters printed onto canvas. This adds a terrific texture to the artwork, and the non-reflective nature of canvas prints allows hanging under any lighting conditions.

The standard movie poster is quite sizable at 27 inches by 40 inches. Legendary movie directors like Hitchcock and Preminger had strong ideas as to how their films were represented, and control over what was included in their posters. The movie poster of Jennifer Lawrence, star of the ‘Hunger Games,’ is gorgeous to hang up. ‘Twilight’s’ Taylor Lautner posing with sculpted biceps in the ‘Breaking Dawn’ movie poster is a favorite of young women.

There is Academy award winner Angelina Jolie with incredible blue eyes staring up at fans in the ‘Salt’ movie poster. Vintage is also a wonderful way to bring drama and conversation to the walls. Think back to Al Pacino in ‘Scarface.’ An unforgettable cinematic role. How about enigmatic Mona Lisa decorating the ‘DaVinci Code’ movie poster?

Of course, there is always handsome Richard Gere on a movie poster, complete in a tuxedo with the Manhattan backdrop in the new release of ‘Arbitrage.’ Movie posters are fun to collect and hang. Each one has an interesting story.

Alexis Zergman as Kyla (The Wedding Video)

Alexis Zegerman known for her role as Zoe, Poppy’s roommate in the film Happy Go Lucky, has a new movie set to release this month. Zegerman plays Kyla in the romantic comedy, The Wedding Video, directed by Nigel Cole. The film follows a wild best man who wants to capture the crazy antics of the guest and the family during the weekend of the wedding, and present the documentary to the bride and groom as a gift. Of course the whole affair does not go as plan and this is where the wedding comedy dazzles.

When the true nature of each character comes out, even the posh setting of the Cheshire society cannot contain the characters within this comedic fare. The film is set to be released August 17 which is a few days before the iPhone 5 debuts. Zegerman won a British Independent Film Award for her role in the movie starring Sally Hawkins for her role as the roommate and best friend.

A New Short: A Running Jump

Mike Leigh, Happy Go Lucky director and co-star Eddie Marsan pair up once more for a new story, A Running Jump. The last pairing of the actor and director had won Marsan a British Independent Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and a London Film Critics Award for Best British Supporting Actor.

Marsan uses his wild acting ability in A Running Jump centring the comedic actions surrounding yet another automobile reminiscent of his driving instructor character in his previous Leigh movie.

In this brief film, Marsan plays, Perry a car salesman, whose mismanagement leads him to depend on his wife, Debbie, for financial backup. The movie centers on Perry’s chaotic day of trying to sell a car based on borrowing money from his wife, played by actress Samantha Spiro, in order that he can sell the car.

When his wife refuses, he is forced to sell a deteriorating car instead. The short had a world premiere at the London 2012 Film Festival with a line of other short films all loosely based on the Olympics. It was shown during the Olympics and Paralympics, and was later broadcast on the BBC and Channel Four.

Here is a short clip of A Running Jump with Marsan seen at the end.

Argo

Argo tells the story of 6 Americans who stranded in Iran during the Iranian revolution and the poor bastard who has to get them out of this godforsaken place.  How do you Get 6 Americans who are hiding in the home of the Canadian ambassador past the Iranian border? With a fake movie!

The story about a CIA agent who comes up with a plan to get the Americans out of Iran by faking they’re a science fiction movie crew who came to scout the exotic locations Iran has to offer sounds equally impossible as ridiculous. But it sure makes for a great movie.

Argo is the kind of movie that doesn’t need high end special effects.
Even though there is almost no action it is one of the most suspenseful movies of the year.  The constant threat of the film crew cover getting blown keeps you on the edge of your seat during the whole movie. If just one Iranian finds out that there are still 6 Americans in Iran, they will kill them all.
Even though the movie is mostly talk it never gets dull. Ben Affleck is great as the CIA exfiltration expert but for me the comical duo  Alan Arkin and John Goodman stole the movie.  The two plays a film producer and a make up artist who help Affleck set up a phony film studio.

Slow paced scenes are alternated with suspenseful ones and the witty comments of some of the characters keep you entertained throughout the dialogues.
Eventhough the movie isn’t all that historically correct; It’s a hollywood production that focusses more on telling a suspenseful and entertaining story then on visual effects and over the top action scenes.

Argo offers one of the most fulfulling movie experiences of the last year.
Go see it!

Yo Tambien (Me Too)

Yo Tambien (Me Too) is a spanish comedic drama film that tells the story of a 34 year old man named Daniel, the first person in his country to graduate from university with Down Syndrome.

Daniel (Pablo Pinedo) makes it through college with the support of his loving parents, but that is only the beginning of his trials. His first true aptitude test is to go out in the world and find a job. Daniel manages to successfully land a job in a social services office where he meets outspoken party girl Laura (Lola Dueñas). Daniel asks Laura out on a date and quickly falls for her. The two embark on a friendship and gradually form a unique bond. Together they must tackle Laura’s relationship issues and Daniel’s unfamiliarity with dating. They break boundaries as they work through their respective problems and grow closer.me too

It must be noted that actor Pablo Pinedo was also one of the first people in Spain to graduate from Spain with Down’s Syndrome. The parallel connection between the life of actor and character surely contributes to the stellar performance he provides. The film is light-hearted, thoughtful and uplifting. Yo Tambien’s on-screen romance has a chemistry that is tangible.

The Movie

Director’s Mike Leigh’s film, Happy Go Lucky, is about thirty-year old Poppy, a lively school teacher who lives life by the laugh, but is unable to charm her serious, seemingly depressed peers. She exhibits the same nature as her primary school students with her ever sunny outlook on life, and finds ways to bring a smile to others.

Her pot-smoking friends, who cannot contain their high-flying wit, are Poppy’s only outlet of freedom in a gloomy city. Once her bicycle is stolen, she must finally learn how to drive, and the movie follows Poppy’s nonsensical laughter from her outings with her friends to her driving lessons under the serious guise of instructor, Scott, who tells her in anger that she “celebrates chaos”.

Then we are treated to Poppy’s flamenco dance teacher, Karina, who takes every dance instruction as if she was training army soldiers for battle. Each moment we share, even the most mundane activities, is sugary sweet with the actress who laughs not at the seriousness of the people she meets, but at the world for not seeing the lighter side of life. Audiences will fall in love with the tickled creature who can’t encounter a doctor’s touch without turning pink from laughter. This film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay written Leigh.

The Five Most Important Actors

The moment the high-pitched woodwind instrument follows the bright character around the North London city streets enjoying every turn on her bicycle, the audience is set to love the sparkling character, Poppy, played by Sally Hawkins. Five years and several awards and nominations later, and the Mike Leigh film, Happy Go Lucky, continues to delight the audience.

What are the elements that have made this movie such a delectable classic? One reason could be that Leigh has an impeccable understanding of how to place the right combination of actors together who have a strong sense for character. He then guides the chemistry of the actors through improvisational meetings where each actor works off another’s art for dialogue. This is where Leigh’s quirky film is born.

Each actor had a certain mission to either contrast or enhance Poppy’s ecstatic behavior. Hawkins brings forth a wildness to her character Poppy, who seems to only play by the rules when she is conducting her primary school class of students. Alexis Zegerman, plays Poppy’s girlfriend and flat mate. Zegerman’s laid back persona easily grounds Poppy even at her most over-the-top moments.

Eddie Marsen was cast perfectly as the maniacal driving instructor who places the reflection of reality in front of the chipper main character with just one serious look or mean suggestion. Another character who gives the gleeful character a sense of place is Poppy’s boyfriend which is played by Joseph Kloska. He enters the movie midway, but adds a sense of realism with his moderate manner.

Then, the audience is treated to a character who takes Poppy’s oddball exterior and takes it up one more notch. Karina Hernandez, the flamenco dance instructor, torments her class with her seriousness for the arts, and places the finishing touch to the whimsical proceedings. With a large classy mix of simple story and kooky characters, it is easy to see why the audiences continue to love the low-budget treat, and why Mike Leigh continues to work with the same actors in other films as well.

The Low Budget “Hidden”

Andrea Riseborough, who co-stars as Dawn in “Happy Go Lucky”, started production in Vancouver, Canada on her new movie. “Hidden” is a low budget film directed by Alexander Skarsgard about a family that stays hidden in a bomb shelter during a mysterious outbreak. In the thriller, she plays Skarsgard’s wife, Claire and mother of their child.

After safely surviving underground for almost a year, their shelter is no longer secured and threatened by an unknown force. Photos taken recently on the set show Riseborough in character talking to the child actress. Hidden film is set for release in 2013. Riseborough is currently in production filming Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman.

She takes on the role of Victoria in this science fiction film about a soldier who is court martial to a distant planet, and ordered to destroy the last of an alien race.
